Innovative Strategies for Visual Design
Visual designers are senders of information who transmit information to recipients. Both designers and recipients go through processing, handling, and analysis psychological awareness processes. Visual communication design shall deliver better information recipient experience.
Because visual information is getting more complicated, huge changes occur in visual communication. How to make recipients "to take another look at it" is an issue that shall be concerned by designers. Good design works shall have visual innovation by following strategies below:
Visual Centered
When looking at visual works, viewers are inspired mainly by their interests in images. They only care for images that they can associate and save with eyes and heart.They ignore images that they do not comprehend and are not familiar with. With the completion of visual awareness, they will switch to another image of interest and to initiate the next visual awareness process.
People follow a visual order by viewing the whole to generate overall impression and then put their attention to a particular point, the visual center of the image before constructing the overall view.Physiological structure of the human eyeball can explain this because our eyeball can instantly have one focus but we cannot focus on two points at the same time.Visual centers with striking features can manipulate viewers for the understanding of core elements. Here, we need to think differently about our first impression and consciousness. Step by step, designers need to create from their own thinking and have their works appreciated by the public.
Visual portion and dimension
Portion and dimension are used to express the relationship between the whole and the parts and between parts, the connection and harmony. The difference between portion and dimension lies in that the former affects attraction to people and their recognition with beauty and portions that satisfy individual demands give joy to viewers. The good command of portion and dimension shows design literacy and life experience of designers.
Control for contrast and consistency
With comparison, the difference of two effectiveness can be identified and we refer to it as contrast. Contrast is unique in terms of feature and art value of visual presentation and symbolic effects. It is the basic way to conduct visual communication, for example, color brightness and warmth, saturation, hue, shape, fineness, directions, quantity, arrangement density, position, greyness, and weight. We are able to utilize these methods in the design of visual communication.
Balance and harmony
Shapes in symmetry give us natural, stable, balanced, harmony, tight, elegant, delicate, and perfect pure aesthetics that match with our visual habits. Symmetry can be seen everywhere in life such as wings of dragonflies, human bodies, and shapes of cars.Balance is used for asymmetry, different from symmetry concepts. Symmetry is an absolute format but balance is between visual and psychological coordination.Gestalt Theory believes that when we are watching anything, we are looking for a balanced and harmonious status.
Connection between the whole and parts
Innovative visual thinking cares for the completeness of feelings and overall impression that help for the organization and perfection being perceived by viewers and enable them to have the drive to act. For example, even if a lady changed to a new hair style and put on makeup, visually, through analyses, comparison, and judgement, we are able to make the correct determination based on overall understanding and perception of innovative visual thinking. That thinking is not independently and mechanically reflecting individual phenomena and discrete elementsfor developing overall reaction and the abilities to organize. Innovative visual thinking possesses the feature of perception towards wholeness.
Sequence of visual movement
Print advertisement contains visual elements that can continuously affect visual organs of viewers. Colors and shapesgenerate stimulation of visual image to facilitate visual shift and change. Movement of visual image can be divided into liner, curve, and reverse sequence according to the direction of movement.
